old time radio/flipbook

So, I listened to a lot of different things on the otr website, and I loved all of it - I'm a sucker for old timey stuff like that.  My absolute favorite, however, were the "Mystery" stories.  I listened to all of them that were on the site.  It's like being read a story in an incredibly animated manner, and I love being read to.  I'm so used to television, I found myself glancing up at my computer to see what was going on, and remembering that it was just the words.  I really think that made it better.  It forces your imagination to run away with the story, and see it exactly the way you want to.  I will probably visit this site again in the future.

My flipbook is finally long enough for the assignment, though I feel it isn't quite finished.  I have several hundred more pages in the book full of opportunity to expand the project, and will likely do that when I have the time.  I'd also like to add a little color, or at least grayscale, to what I have already.  But, it's finished enough for now, and I have a lot of options if I choose to continue working with it.  Here are a few photos:

Not the best photos, but I was in a pinch and had to use PhotoBooth to take them.  So they're also backwards from the way they are in the book.  I would bother to fix it in Photoshop, but I want to scan the book into the computer and create an animation that way, too.

  1. Love It . . .

I love gesture and line drawings - especially stick figures and yours are just amazing. There is a story, but it's neither obvious or distinct (this is a compliment by the way). I enjoyed the way one of the characters "lassoed" some of the words in the book. I felt something when the figures came out of the head. I don't know what, but there was something and I want to explore it more.

I only wish professor ECHEVERRY wouldn't have raved about it so much as I sound like I'm boasting only because of what he said - I'm not. However, what he said was deserved.

p.s. Not sure about color, but it's your vision - just don't do it because you think you have to and if you do . . . think watercolor.

  2. I did get a powerful emotional presence within the story, describing female nature. It was very creative and idealistic. The woman giving birth, the head molding, and the men (?) doing construction (removing the top part of the head to bring out a female). This was all very interesting in drawing structure.

Favorite part is when the woman came out of the giant head in the end.The artistic drawings with her hair really drew out to me a female vision. Very good concept of the female body and the pregnancy effect as well. This really drew out both realism and abstract effects.

I do agree with Santi on your work being excellent and very creative use of the age within the book. However I feel you should be a little careful of using outside words and phrases, so they don't counter the focus of your eyes when trying to see the story. On the other hand, I also feel that book history adds effect of its own. The underline words and written words within the book do add a history like transformation with the stick figures and molded head centerpieces. Just my opinions.

Still you did a great job, love the stick figure elements with the molding head.

  3. I'm going to start off by saying that this IS phenomenal. The choice of book was perfect and the fact that notes were already taken in it makes it
so unique. I loved your story with the mother and child (that scene with the umbilical cord reminded me of madame butterfly). The way you drew everything using simple scribbly line drawings made each picture perfect. I agree that you don't HAVE to add color. I think the simplicity of the black and white drawings is classic. I'm interested to see what you do with the rest of it!
    Great Job.

  4. Your flip book is AMAZING! I loved everything about it.

My favorite part had to be the beginning with the pregnant woman. Some invisible force pulling the child out of the mother with the umbilical cord still attached.. wow. Such intensity.

Everything was so simple yet there was such complex meaning behind it all.

The black and white really made a difference in telling the story. Great choice in not making it with color.

Your concept of this is just so great. Awesome job!!

  5. Incredible! I loved the whole piece but my favorite part was the surprising explosion from the woman. I also liked the people climbing in and out of the head. The drawings were simple, yet beautifully drawn. The concept is complex and expresses an intricate meaning that keeps me wondering more and more about it. Well done! It was beautiful!

  6. The book you used was awesome! the added notes and comments from previous owners really made your flip book that much more interesting. It made the overall animation look like a doodle someone did while in class bored. As a whole your project was amazing, from the story line, drawings the complete animation!

  7. Loved your book the best! You definitely put thought and effort into it. The lack of color didn't take away from the story at all. In fact it would have ruined it. I would love to see more of your work. Very talented!

  8. I liked that you used a very provocative concept as the basis of your flip book. The drawings were handled very well and were very clear and translated differently to each individual viewer. The fact that you used a law book also added another layer onto the meaning. I found it all very interesting when combined together.

  9. Oh my goodness, one-the book you used was so "vintagely" awesome! It went along so well with your illustrations. It looked like the animation just happen to be in there.

Your artwork was beautiful too, I loved your clever story. I liked that you didn't use color, but that is just my opinion. :) Your drawings were extremely unique. Keep up the good work!
